KYOCERA challenge to find coders of the future

KYOCERA Document Solutions has announced the launch of the second annual KYOCodes competition. The contest, which is expanding for 2018, aims to find the app developers of tomorrow and help address the UK’s software development shortage.
The inaugural KYOCodes competition last year saw a team of three students from Fife College walk away with £4,000 worth of prizes and accreditation as an approved KYOCERA developer for their app which combined scanning with social media. The 2018 coding challenge will again be open to all education establishments in the Fujitsu Education Ambassador Programme, but will also invite teams from 100 universities across the UK to test their mettle.
Keir Nellyer, who was part of the triumphant Fife College team in 2017 has since begun an apprenticeship with Edinburgh-based scheduling software company Airts. Asked about the benefit of winning the competition he said: “I’ve been interested in programming from a young age, and Java in particular. The KYOCodes competition definitely helped to expand our technical skills and learn a new environment, outside of what we were used to.”
Entrants will compete over the 10 week coding challenge, where they’ll be asked to design a brand new app for KYOCERA’s suite of application software, powered by HyPAS. The winning team will be the one that designs the app which best meets a real business need and challenge and will be assessed by a panel of industry experts from across the field.
Prizes for the winning team will include up to £1000 of Apple vouchers per student for the team that comes in first place, up to £500 of Apple vouchers each for the second place and up to £250 of Apple vouchers each for the third finalists. The top three winning universities will also win a KYOCERA multifunctional device worth £2500. All teams who pass the qualification stage will gain a KYOCERA HyPAS app developer accreditation and any students who showcase exceptional skill will be considered for KYOCERA’s talent acquisition programme.
Leonard Sim, key accounts executive at KYOCERA Document Solutions said: “We were incredibly impressed at the quality of entries last year. This year, we’re taking it up a notch and raising the level of competition by inviting universities to compete for the top prize by developing their very own app. Challenges like this showcase exactly how industry and educators can work together to prepare the next generation of software developers for real work challenges in their careers.”
