The human brain processes more visual information than any other sense, with research showing that 90% of information transmitted to the brain is visual. What employees see every day affects how they feel, how they work and how they connect with the brand and each other. From the quality of lighting to the use of colour and space, visual design plays a vital role in shaping the workplace experience.
Lighting That Works: More Than Illumination
Lighting is one of the most powerful tools in workplace design. Proper lighting not only enhances visibility but also affects mood, alertness and energy levels throughout the day.
Studies show that employees working in natural light report an 84% drop in symptoms of eyestrain, headaches and blurred vision, according to research by the American Society of Interior Designers. Cooler lighting temperatures (5,000K and above) are ideal for workspaces requiring concentration and alertness, while warmer tones (around 3,000K) are more appropriate for lounge or break areas.
Dealers should guide clients toward LED systems with adjustable colour temperatures, daylight-simulating desk lamps, and motion-activated lighting to reduce energy waste. Layering overhead, task and ambient lighting helps cater to varied tasks while creating a more dynamic and adaptable workspace.
Colour Theory in Action
Colour has a profound psychological effect on the brain, influencing behaviour and emotional response. According to the Institute for Colour Research, people make a subconscious judgement about an environment within 90 seconds of entering – and up to 90% of that assessment is based on colour alone.
Blues and greens are known to evoke calm and focus, making them ideal for concentration zones. Yellow adds energy and optimism, great for creative areas, while deeper tones like burgundy or navy can bring a sense of professionalism and stability to boardrooms or client-facing areas. Dealers can support clients by helping them choose colour schemes that align with company culture, brand identity and the desired atmosphere in each space. A well-curated palette can unify a space and promote emotional alignment with business goals.
Designing for Visual Diversity
Not every employee experiences visual stimuli the same way. Visual fatigue, colour sensitivity and light glare can affect comfort and performance. That’s why it’s essential to consider a variety of visual needs when planning office layouts and design choices.
Simple solutions like using matte rather than glossy finishes, providing screen filters, or offering adjustable blinds can make a significant difference. Creating a mix of high-stimulation and low-stimulation zones ensures everyone can find a space where they feel visually comfortable and able to concentrate. Dealers should take an inclusive approach, recommending design strategies and products that accommodate neurodiverse individuals or those with visual impairments. Even small changes can make a space feel more welcoming and supportive.
Visuals don’t just impact individuals. They shape how a business is perceived as a whole. Branded elements such as murals, inspirational messages, feature walls and consistent typography reinforce company values and help staff feel a stronger sense of purpose. When visitors walk into a space, their first impressions are visual and often immediate.
