In the modern business environment, data is everything. That is never more significant than on Data Privacy Day (28 January), when KYOCERA Document Solutions Europe highlighted the value of protecting both consumer and company information to provide an impregnable data security policy.
“Organisations must make data protection a central part of their business strategy. The implementation of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation has opened the eyes of many companies to the importance of compliance, but a huge proportion of the market are yet to recognise the role that security can have on the reputation of a company,” said Owais Ahmed, European information security officer at KYOCERA Document Solutions Europe.
This year recognised the 12th annual Data Privacy Day. Since its foundation in 2007, firms have become more and more aware of their responsibilities and the importance of protecting that information. With new technology providing new ways to safeguard this data, it also creates new security threats.
For businesses, this means they need to invest in further enhancing their data security, with the goal of protecting their customers’ privacy rights. “Failure to safeguard consumer or business data not only hits the trust in a company, but also leads to lower customer satisfaction and can have a major impact,” added Ahmed, explaining the true value of data privacy.
A 2018 survey by the Direct Marketing Association found that 86% of consumers want more control over the use and storage of their personal information, yet many companies are still slow to catch up in how they are protecting crucial information. Whether it is a client’s personal data or internal company information, securing this data must be a major objective for businesses in 2019.
There are general measures that should form a part of the overall business security strategy, such as proper training of the employees and the protection of networks, but it must also not be forgotten that connected devices such as printers and MFPs play a crucial role in the use and storage of data.
“It is important to protect your information through access authorisation and network security, though printers and MFPs are an aspect of data transfer which is often not prioritised by organisations. KYOCERA provides the tools needed to ensure that employees can print securely,” explained Ahmed.
Printers process large amounts of data, much of which is sensitive information. This is stored in various elements, including a hard-disk, SD card, an image on a drum, RAM or on physical paper. This must be protected to ensure data is erased before being removed from the network, reducing a risk of unauthorised access.
Firms should ensure that they stay up to date with the very latest security measures and standards in order to remain at the forefront of data protection. Failure to do so could be costly.
