Cardiff Metropolitan University’s in-house print team is helping the faculty to reduce waste, environmental impact and cost by refurbishing furniture instead of buying new
The approach is in line with the university’s sustainability strategy. Desks that had been earmarked for replacement at a cost of £1,500 each, were refurbished at a fraction of the cost giving a significant monetary saving and reduction in environmental impact.
The result was so successful that the university estates team has expressed an interest in covering a further 500 office desks across the campuses.
The desks are being refurbished using Antalis’ range of Coala Interior Film, part of the Coala range of self-adhesive media that offers substrates for indoor and outdoor use. Coala Interior Film comprises 470+ surface finishes across nine collections: wood, leather, marble, stone, metallic, glitter, solid colours, fabric and soft touch. The easily applied architectural films offer an inexpensive way to update interior spaces, including doors, walls and furniture.
The in-house print department has since set up a showroom with eight desks on display – each covered in a different Coala Interior Film finish – from which the university’s departments can choose. The print team has already received several commissions, including a new student catering outlet, a new ‘Global Lounge’, hybrid working offices and redesigned spaces in the university’s library and IT suites.
