The ONS reported a 2.6% sickness absence rate in 2022, leading to 185.6 million lost working days. Research suggests up to a 20% increase in part-week absence during winter. Staff absence costs a median of £568 per employee.
Businesses are now focusing on winter bug prevention as hotdesking, used for hybrid workers, raises disease transmission risks. Denise Hanson of The British Institute of Cleaning Science advises reviewing cleaning practices to ensure they meet building requirements, given the shift in the work landscape over the past few years.
