NEWS: Government Taskforce Pushes SMEs Toward Digital Growth

As reported by Gov.uk, a new report recommends AI tools, e-invoicing standards, and a central government body to boost SME digital adoption

The SME Digital Adoption Taskforce has published an interim report outlining key recommendations aimed at encouraging small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to adopt productivity-enhancing digital technologies.

Among the proposed measures is the creation of a single point of accountability within the government to drive digital adoption efforts. The taskforce also recommends developing AI-powered support tools that will be accessible to all SMEs, alongside initiatives that utilise behavioural science and targeted communication to stimulate demand for digital solutions. Additionally, the report suggests the establishment of e-invoicing standards to simplify and streamline financial processes for small businesses.

These recommendations are set to be refined further in collaboration with taskforce members and SMEs before the final report’s anticipated publication in Spring 2025.

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) launched the industry-led SME Digital Adoption Taskforce in April 2024 to explore strategies for supporting small businesses in embracing digital tools such as cloud computing, customer relationship management (CRM) systems and resource planning software.

The final report is expected to provide comprehensive guidance on accelerating SME digital transformation, helping small firms improve efficiency, productivity and growth.
