With the era of COVID-19 lockdowns now seemingly behind us, businesses are turning their attention to other priorities that have maybe been put on a back burner for the past couple of years. Often, that means looking at sustainability, not just in how the business operates but also the products they buy and sell.
With the case for climate change indisputable, many companies are already working to make their products and businesses less impactful on the environment, and is increasingly being driven by customer demand, especially from ‘generation Z’ – those born after the mid-1990s – who are an increasingly powerful consumer voice.
In this issue, we explore sustainability in greater detail. For instance, looking at what makes a product ‘green’, and how it isn’t just about the end product – although reducing the amount of single-use plastic used in them is important – but also how it is made and reducing waste in that process.
Another facet of this is addressing the issue of deliveries. In the past, there was a race to see who could deliver products the fastest. But now, there is a conversation to be had with customers about making fewer, but bigger deliveries to save on fuel consumption and costs.
The rise in fuel costs is just one aspect that make today still challenging times for many businesses as they recover from the effects of the pandemic, and disruption in the supply chain, which has been ongoing for some time now due to several factors, including the pandemic and Brexit, is another significant one. While the supply chain is an issue for the short-term, sustainability is here to stay and will only rise up the agenda as more younger people, who are more switched onto these issues, enter the workplace. Any business that doesn’t take it seriously now will be left behind.
