NEWS: UK Small Firms Falling Behind on Net-Zero Targets

As reported by Edie, just one in four UK small businesses expect to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050

This is despite being responsible for nearly half of the country’s business-related carbon output, according to a new report by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) in partnership with Zurich UK.

The report, based on a survey of 953 small firms conducted in November 2024 by research agency Verve, highlights a widening gap between the UK’s climate goals and the ability of smaller enterprises to contribute meaningfully.

While 64% of respondents believe sustainability should be a top government priority, only 25% expect their own businesses to meet the UK’s legally binding net-zero deadline. A lack of financial resources remains a major hurdle. Only 13% say they have sufficient funding to decarbonise, while 38% cite limited capital and 33% say green investments take too long to yield returns.

Knowledge and skills gaps are also holding firms back. Just 18% of small businesses feel they have the necessary skills to implement green changes, and only 26% say they have adequate knowledge to take meaningful climate action.

FSB policy chair Tina McKenzie commented: “Many small firms still bear deep scars from the energy price crisis, which saw their bills multiply several times over. After witnessing so many peers close their doors, it’s no surprise that energy independence is now a top priority. The sustainable economy has massive growth potential, and small firms must be empowered to seize the opportunities ahead.”
