Cheshire retailer Stationery Supplies selected for Small Business Saturday countdown

Stationery Supplies based in Marple and Wilmslow, Cheshire has been chosen as one of 100 impressive small businesses from across the UK to mark the official count down to this year’s Small Business Saturday

Stationery Supplies, an independent stationery, greeting card and gift shop was selected to be part of the campaign’s prestigious Small Biz 100 line-up, which showcases inspiring, independent businesses from across the country.

Now in its ninth year in the UK, Small Business Saturday celebrates small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support businesses in their communities. This year it is calling on the nation to share a ‘big thank you’ with small firms to recognise their vital role throughout the pandemic.

Stationery Supplies will be highlighted on social media on Friday 3rd September as part of the 100-day countdown to Small Business Saturday UK.

Sarah Laker, owner of Stationery Supplies said: “I’m well chuffed to have been chosen and to celebrate our #SmallBiz100 day and to thank our customers for their support during the pandemic we’ll have chocolates and a lucky dip of free gifts for all customers spending over £5 in both our shops. Gifts have been generously donated by some of our suppliers including Premier Stationery and Dandelion Cards.

“Small Business Saturday UK will return on 4 December 2021, following record-breaking success last year, which saw an estimated £1.1bn spent with small businesses on the day itself. This year, ahead of the UN Climate Summit COP26 in Glasgow, the SmallBiz100 features small firms with a passion for sustainability, to demonstrate the important part small businesses play in tackling climate change and helping the UK to achieve net zero.

“Where possible at Stationery Supplies we strive to find eco alternatives to regular stationery, for example we stock a range of filing which is both made from recycled materials and recyclable. We highlight products with recycled/recyclable contents within our stores which include, filing, pens made from recycled bottles, rulers, gifts made from recycled plastic, greeting cards without cello wrap with FSC board and recycled envelopes, recycled leather notebooks and vegan notebooks to name a few.

“Through our membership with Office Club we offer a great eco printer paper which supports the Durrell Wildlife Foundation and we use this for our photocopier services. All packaging received in our supplier deliveries is either reused for our online sales, or recycled, and we use recyclable paper tape to seal parcels. Whilst it isn’t possible to replace all our products with eco ones, we do have a good range that are, and a name locally for caring about where we buy our products from.”

Michelle Ovens CBE, director of Small Business Saturday UK, said: “Throughout the crisis we have been reminded of the special role that small firms play in local areas, looking after their customers, communities and the planet. We are excited to be kicking off this year’s campaign to show our thanks to amazing small businesses like Stationery Supplies  As firms recover from the challenges of the pandemic we are calling upon everyone to get behind the campaign to make it our most impactful Small Business Saturday yet.”

A grassroots, not-for-profit campaign Small Business Saturday was originally founded by American Express in the U.S. in 2010. It remains the principal supporter of the campaign in the UK, as part of its ongoing championing the UK high street and commitment to encourage consumers to shop small.

On Small Business Saturday, customers across the UK go out and support all types of small businesses, both online and in brick-and-mortar stores. Many small businesses take an active role in promoting the day by hosting events and offering promotions.

Small Business Saturday attracts huge attention on the day itself, with an impact that last all year. Last year the campaign trended at number one in the UK on Twitter, with the Prime Minister, leader of the opposition and the Mayor of London among those publicly supporting the campaign. Over 90% of local councils also supported the campaign.
