  1. Eye contact

Eye contact is vital. It tells someone you’re listening, while also allowing you to both express and read emotions – even between strangers. For some people, the thought of making eye contact is daunting but, if you can attempt it, it will make you seem more honest and open. Next time you’re having a meaningful chat, try to let your eyes linger a little longer.

2. Playing with hair

Sensory neurons at the base of hair follicles mean that having our hair gently played with can feel like bliss – and the best part? There’s really no technique to it; even running a hairbrush gently running through your partner’s hair will do the trick. Not only is it relaxing, it also releases oxytocin, the bonding hormone, and will only deepen your connection.

3. Showing gratitude

Everyone likes to be acknowledged, so next time let your partner know when they’ve done something you’re grateful for. It could be bringing them a small gift from the supermarket, or be as simple as a meaningful ‘Thank you’, or the day-to-day love you offer. Whatever it is, take some time to reflect on what your special person means to you, and let them know how much you value them!

4. Hand-holding

A 2009 study measured the brainwaves of couples while they were sitting together. It found that when the couple held hands while one was experiencing mild pain, their wavelengths would sync up and the participants experiencing the pain reported feeling it less intensely than when they weren’t holding hands. These findings show the comfort and intimacy that comes with such a simple gesture.

5. Recognise their achievements

Who wouldn’t love to have a cheerleader in your corner? Be the person who celebrates wins and helps keep up the momentum with support and encouragement. This might involve hyping up their achievements at work, taking interest in their hobbies, or recognising how far they’ve come on a personal journey!
